This group of pages is all about the running anatomy of the joints, muscles and movements we use when running. I believe it’s really important to have at least a basic understanding of our running anatomy as it can help in so many ways. Knowing your muscles from your tendons, the typical movement patterns involved in the running cycle and the basic structure of the knee joint for example, can really help to understand the stress being placed on each body part and which structure may be hurting!
I have separated this section firstly into the varying joints which are most important to the runner in respect of injuries – the hip, knee and ankle. I have also included a basic description of the gait cycle, from heel strike through to toe off which is useful in understanding the way the body moves and when reading more advanced information on the subject. Finally, the importance of the foot when it comes to running form and injury and explanations of the common terms associated with the foot when running – including overpronation and supination.
